Human intervention is not necessary on the transactional level for many jobs. An individual order can flow without being touched. And in many cases a customer can get simple questions answered on their own much faster by using your web portal than by calling and waiting for somebody to find the answer. Clients appreciate it when they can get back to their own business as quickly as possible.
When this is happening properly, the limited time we have for customer interaction can be invested in truly listening to their needs, rather than scrambling to manage jobs & deadlines. The time that we spend with them will be "quality time", and customers appreciate this on many levels.
